Food Access for All Summit and 5k Fun Run

  • Truly Living Well-Wheat Street Gardens 5 Hilliard Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30312 United States (map)

In honor of AmeriCorps VISTA 50th Anniversary, The Boulevard Food Co-op will hold a community Summit on Problems and Solutions to Food Access. Boulevard Food Co-Op will be featured as 1 solution that has had some success addressing hunger. We invite everyone doing any socially good work around hunger, poverty etc. to learn and share in a community discussion that clarifies what we need and what we can do to address our needs with community driven solutions. The Boulevard Food Co-op hopes it will be an inspiring event that encourages service providers and neighbors to do what they can to help alleviate food insecurity.

The day after the summit, we will be hosting a 5K FUNd Run and Walk. The course will begin at Truly Living Well's Wheat Street Garden on Hilliard Street, travel up Boulevard to Ponce de Leon and then circle through Whole Food's parking lot. Our midway stop is an important element of the event. Whole Foods will provide about 12 lbs of groceries (equivalent to 3 meals) to the walkers that wish to participate. They will then carry the bag of food back to Truly Living Well, where the Food Bank will collect the food and then distribute out to agency partners in the Old Fourth Ward such as the co-op, Operation Peace, Fort St. etc. This experience is intended to simulate shopping in a food desert and highlight issues of accessing fresh produce in urban environments.
