Diet for a Smaller, Hotter Planet

In this SUMMIT Signature Series talk, mother-daughter team and national best-selling authors Frances Moore Lappé and Anna Lappé explore one of the biggest questions of our time: How to feed the world and care for the planet at the same time? Their answers—spanning more than four decades of research—may surprise you. They reveal that in fact there is more than enough food to feed us all. Indeed, they share the research that shows we can produce enough without squandering the earth—if only we radically rethink food and the questions we ask. For the Lappé’s, the question “Why hunger in a world of plenty?” has led the duo on a journey to understanding the roots of our many-faceted global crises, from environmental destruction to inequality and hunger amidst plenty. They share these roots and their abiding sense of hope. Their work inspires a new way of thinking about hunger and feeding the future.

About the Lappés

Frances Moore Lappé is the author and co-author of 18 books including the best-selling “Diet for a Small Planet,” which sold over three million copies. Gourmet Magazine named Moore Lappé as one of 25 people, along with Thomas Jefferson, Upton Sinclair, and Julia Child, whose work has changed the way America eats. Co-written with Joseph Collins, her most recent work is “World Hunger: 10 Myths.” She is the co-founder of three organizations, including Oakland-based think tank Food First and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute, which she leads with her daughter Anna Lappé, who is also a best-selling author. Frances and her daughter have also co-founded theSmall Planet Fund, which channels resources to democratic social movements worldwide.

Anna Lappé is a national best-selling author, a respected advocate for sustainability and justice along the food chain and an advisor to funders investing in food system transformation. A recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award and named one of “TIME” magazine’s “Eco” Who’s Who, Lappé is a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and the Small Planet Fund with her mother, Frances Moore Lappé. Lappé’s work has been translated internationally and featured in “The New York Times,” “Gourmet,” “Oprah Magazine,” among many other outlets. Her most recent book, “Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It,” was named by “Booklist” and “Kirkus” as one of the best environmental book’s of the year.
