CULTIVATING SHIITAKES WITH LOVE IS LOVE FARM

  • Love is Love @ Gaia Gardens 900 Dancing Fox Rd. Decatur, GA (map)

Join us for a day of fun and exploration as we delve into the secretive world of fungi by learning to cultivate your own delicious mushrooms at home.  We’ll harness the transformative power of mushrooms to create healthy delicious food at home using simple and inexpensive materials.

Shiitake mushroom logs are a great way to get the most out of your growing space by utilizing shady spaces. Attendees will learn the concepts and habits of fungi, hands-on strategies for inoculating and caring for shiitake mushroom logs, and managing shiitake mushroom production. Each attendee will take home an inoculated log.

Participants will go home with one outdoor mushroom log made while in the class.  Logs produce in 6 months to 1 year after inoculated and continue to yield for several years. Workshop is rain or shine. Space is limited.

About the Instructor:
Love is Love Farm is not a place, but the heart-work of Joe Reynolds and Judith Winfrey. Operated since 2008, Love is Love Farm aspires to demonstrate that young, land-less farmers can build a successful farming operation and actively serve the good food movement through mindful land stewardship.

Gaia Gardens is a certified organic farm, owned by East Lake Commons Co-housing community, and currently leased to Love is Love Farm. The farm is 5 acres, including hillsides, forest fragments, and an acre spring-fed pond. The 1.5 acre growing space is a patchwork of fields dedicated to rotations and crop diversthat include an intensive cover cropping schedule. Orcharding areas include blueberries, figs, and muscadine grapes. Produce is sold via a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, at the East Atlanta Village Farmers' Market on Thursday afternoons, and to good restaurants throughout Decatur and Atlanta.
