Trees Atlanta hiring Camp Counselors

Trees Atlanta seeks four individuals with experience working with youth (elementary and middle school age) in classroom and outdoor settings in a teaching / coaching role. As one of four Camp Counselors for our Spring Break Camp and Summer Camp, you will be responsible for conducting classes and activities of the camp program; you will report directly the Youth Education Manager and will have the support of Camp Interns to ensure proper camper to staff ratios.

Start Date: June 6, 2016 (training April 4-8 and June 2-3, 2016)
End Date: July 22, 2016 (no camp July 4-8)
Compensation: $12/hr (40 hr/week)

Our summer day camps are a fun blend of environmental education and lots of outdoor exploration on the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum. Camp curriculum and schedule is designed. Camp Counselors will bring the program to life for each week of camp. Responsibilities for Camp Counselors include teaching environmental lessons (many based on STEM principles), organizing materials for lessons, monitoring and correcting camper behavior as needed, ensuring camper safety, bike riding, leading activities (e.g., tree ID, orienteering, art, tree planting & mulching) and creating positive memories for our budding environmental stewards.

Candidates meeting the requirements listed below are encouraged to apply, particularly certified teachers and student teachers desiring a summer break position may be ideal candidates. Candidates will experience a summer outdoors in an active setting, balanced with indoor environmental education projects and lessons. You should embrace the outdoors, nature, learning activities, and be eager to model positive behaviors to young campers. Responsible, trustworthy candidates meeting most or all the qualifications listed below are encourage to apply. Camp Counselors must work all days indicated from start to end date, plus training days. Work days are Monday through Friday, must be able to work 8-hour days, including on-site lunch break.

Candidates should meet most of these requirements:
• College graduate or currently matriculated
• Experience teaching students 1st-6th (environmental education, science, STEM/STEAM desired)
• Ability to work with students in outdoor setting
• Experience leading youth summer camps
• Ability to work collaboratively on a team
• Able to interact with campers and parents in a empathic, polite manner
• Experience with time and task management
• Able to ride a bike and supervise campers on bikes
• Experience with tree and plant identification, orienteering, and arts & crafts
• Certified in 1st Aid and CPR, desired

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
• Physically capable of active days outdoors in various weather conditions
• Must be able to tolerate working outdoors, with exposure to sun, heat, cold, inclement weather, and insects.
• Must be a confident and safe bike rider.
• Must be physically fit and able to lift up to 25 lbs.
• Must love working with youth
• Early morning and early Evening may be necessary; final schedules will be set upon hire
• Each camp week requires a 40-hour commitment
• Camp Counselors may have some supervisory roles with Camp Interns. You will report to the Youth Education Manager.
