2020 MLK Day Volunteer Opportunities

In observation of the life and legacy of Atlanta hero and Civil Rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Monday, January 20 is a federal holiday. What better way to pay tribute to Dr. King than by volunteering and giving back? We’ve compiled several volunteer opportunities involving local agriculture below -- if you know of any that we’ve missed, please email events@foodwellalliance.org.

MLK Day Volunteer Opportunities

Truly Living Well - World’s Biggest Leaf Pile

Help the amazing team at Truly Living Well create the world’s largest leaf pile before supporting them with volunteer power around the farm in preparation for the upcoming growing season.

Concrete Jungle - Making Soup with The Learning Kitchen

On Monday, January 20th a group of tweens and teens will be taking over the kitchen (with a little assistance from us) and creating soups that they will "sell" to the public for a suggested donation of $10. Monies received will benefit Concrete Jungle and their year round mission to provide fresh fruit and vegetables to those in need. All remaining soup will be packaged and distributed to CJ's partner agencies.

No need to sign up, just show up!

Whitehall Terrace - Garden Cleaning

Whitehall Terrace is looking for fun, committed and service-minded people who don't mind getting their hands dirty to clean and tend to the garden.

West Atlanta Watershed Alliance - OAC Restoration

Help the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance to restore and maintain habitat at the Outdoor Activity Center, a 26-acre urban forest, in southwest Atlanta and the Hardnett Community Garden. Please wear warm clothing that you do not mind getting dirty. Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times. Work gloves, tools, snacks and warm drinks will be provided. Feel free to pack a light lunch!

Trees Atlanta - Tree Plantings

Underwood Hills

Help the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance to restore and maintain habitat at the Outdoor Activity Center, a 26-acre urban forest, in southwest Atlanta and the Hardnett Community Garden. Please wear warm clothing that you do not mind getting dirty. Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times. Work gloves, tools, snacks and warm drinks will be provided. Feel free to pack a light lunch!

South-View Cemetery

Celebrate MLK, Jr. Day and help make a difference by planting new trees in South-View Cemetery. South-View Cemetery is "the final resting place for over 80,000 African Americans. Many of whom have made significant contributions to American history and the struggle for freedom and peace" (visit southviewcemetery.com to learn more). Trees planted here will provide cleaner air, cool shade, and all around improved habitat for humans and wildlife living in Atlanta. Activities include digging holes, mulching, watering, and cleaning up your planting area.
